Ulster's car bubble bursts
Article Abstract:
During the years of violence in Northern Ireland, people tended to go everywhere by car, regarding walking around the streets as dangerous. This led to a very high level of ownership of cars, and of 'performance' cars in particular. People have become accustomed to driving fast, and this has pushed accident rates very high. The ceasefire has made the streets and public transport safer, but people still prefer to drive everywhere, and accident rates are not falling.
