Chardonnay: wine of the '90s
Article Abstract:
Eighty-nine chardonnays were tested. Each was priced under $20 and distributed widely in the wine market. Of the 89, 51 warranted an acceptable rating with a score of 14 points out of 20. This was a disappointment attributable to the extensive growth in the chardonnay vineyard arena in which many vines are only fives years old. The two outstanding wines were Tyrell's Old Winery 1996, $10-$15, and Hardys Nottage Hill 1996, $7-$9. The worst was Blue Pyrenees Estate 1996, priced at an unwarranted $18 and higher. The key elements for good chardonnay included a smooth, rich, oily taste. Its sweetness and acidity were balanced with a good aroma and a pale golden color.
