Guaranteed peace of mind?: An extended warranty for your car can help guard against expensive repair bills. But don't expect an army of mechanics at your beck and call fixing everything for free
Article Abstract:
Extended warranties, or mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI) policies are not the same as new-car warranties, and they usually provide cover for a defined set of mechanical breakdowns. The contract is with the insurance company, who will have ultimate responsibility for deciding on whether a claim will be paid or not. Legal cover may be more restricted with older or higher mileage cars. It is sometimes difficult to determine exactly what an extended warranty covers, as the exclusions are not always explained clearly.

Extended warranty worries continue
Article Abstract:
Despite the introduction of a code of practice regarding the sale of extended warranties in 1995 by the British Retail Consortium, a survey of current practice among retailers has revealed disappointing results. Seventy electrical stores were included in the survey, of which over 25% failed to display leaflets giving terms and conditions of extended warranties. Sales staff were found to give misleading information on product reliability and used pressure selling tactics.

The extended warranty scandal
Article Abstract:
Extended warranties or guarantees sold with large electrical items offer poor value for money. The warranties are sold to cover the cost of repairing the new item, but repair costs will probably be less than the cost of the cover. Over five million such warranties are sold annually in the United Kingdom, at a total cost of 400 million pounds sterling.
