One of the main benefits of hand-helds is cost, with prices ranging from 238 pounds sterling to 749 pounds sterling, while their use of readily-available batteries gives them an advantage over lap-tops.

The UK market for handheld computers is dominated by 3Com/Palm Computing, followed by Psion and trailed by HP, Compaq, Sharp and Casio. The market is confused by a blurring of the distinctions between hand-held devices, phones and notebooks, and manufacturers need to work harder to ensure their products are distinctive.
