Article Abstract:

Six middle of the range estate cars were tested for performance and handling and equipment levels. The Daewoo Nubira 2.0 CDX was praised by most drivers, although handling was let down by imprecise steering. It received the lowest secondary safety score. The Ford Mondeo 2.0 16v LX had a mostly smooth ride and provided one of the largest boots. The Peugeot 406 2.0 LX was praised for being practical and rewarding. Others tested were the Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 16v LS, Volvo V40 2.0 and the VW Passat 1.8 20vS, which was rated the best of the group. The Peugeot 406 and Ford Mondeo are also worth consideration.

Large family contest

Article Abstract:

Large family cars from Ford, Fiat, Nissan, VW and Volvo, as well as an American car, were tested for reliability, equipment, performance and secondary safety. The best on test was the VW Passat which gave a comfortable ride and was quiet with a spacious interior. The Ford Mondeo, and Nissan Primera are competent cars. The Fiat Marea had poor ride quality and the Volvo S40 had vague handling, and were not recommended. The Chrysler Neon also had several shortcomings.
