The facts on council tax
Article Abstract:
Local authorities use council tax to pay for education, social services, highways, rescue services, parks, libraries, planning and waste disposal. The amount of tax due is calculated on the value of the property and all the people living in the property must ensure the full amount is paid. Students and mentally handicapped people are exempt from council tax. Single people pay 25% less tax. Councils set their own level of tax so there are regional variations. Failure to pay may result in a prison sentence.
