The failure of the MOT
Article Abstract:
A survey of 36 MOT inspection garages found that 8 passed cars that should have failed, and not all the failure points were detected. A second hand Volkswagen Polo used in the survey, passed one of its tests at one garage, although it had five clear failure points, and at another most of the failure points were missed. 15 garages failed items which should have been acceptable in MOT test terms. The survey showed that the safety aims of the MOT are not being met. Common MOT failure points are listed and the prices for tests are given. Information on what to do if you disagree with the MOT verdict is described.

MOT testers on trial: does the MOT test keep dangerous cars off the road or just provide garages with an excuse to charge for unnecessary repairs?
Article Abstract:
Six cars were given 36 MOT tests to test the current standard of MOT testing. The cars were all MOT failures with a variety of obvious problems. Only two of the MOT tests were entirely correct, and half the garages failed items that should have passed. Details of each of MOT tests are provided. It is also noted that a few basic checks by car owners could mean the difference between passing the MOT or failing it, such as wiper blades, windscreen washers, and tyre pressure.
