Learning-by-doing and the development of industrial districts

Article Abstract:

The development of Marshallian industrial districts (MIDs) is examined. These are districts home to several small firms that generate similar goods for exportation. The localized aggregation of skills as a result of workers living together in the same location is beneficial to these industrial districts. This study assumes that the cost function of a firm in an MID is a decreasing function of the total output generated in the past by the firms in the locale. Using a simple model that involves a learning-by-doing process, this analysis captures the evolution of the distribution of activities among districts. The economy is demonstrated to approach a balanced/unbalanced spatial structure according to the manner by which workers relate to expand their knowledge base.
