Under lock & key
Article Abstract:
Secure locks on external doors are important in providing protection against burglars who enter homes through either the front or back door in around 40% of cases. A mortise sashlock with at least five levers should be fitted to back doors and both a mortise lock and a cylinder rim lock should be fitted to front doors. The most secure locks are Kitemarked to British Standard 3621. The vulnerability of doors and door-frames can be reduced by fitting a door reinforcing kit. Homes secured to a certain level often qualify for a discount on house contents insurance premiums.

As safe as houses?
Article Abstract:
Householders can take a number of steps to protect their homes against burglars. These include locking doors and windows, locking gates and sheds, keeping ladders and tools locked away, and putting items of value out of sight when leaving home. Good quality locks should be fitted to doors, windows and garages. It is also worth installing a burglar alarm, strong doors, and a security light, and using laminated glass in doors. Other suggestions include marking property and taking photographs in case items are stolen, so that they can be identified.

Safe as houses?
Article Abstract:
A survey for a mortgage can cost between 230-300 pounds sterling but it will not necessarily tell a house-buyer what all the problems are. The surveyor should tell them to instruct specialists to look at drains or the roof. A building survey is useful if the property is old or is suspected to have structural problems. These surveys are more technical and give advice about what repairs are needed. These surveys cost between 350-600 pounds. Clients can get compensation from a surveyor if they do not detect faults when doing the survey.
