FRANCE: PACKAGING FOR SMALL DOMESTIC APPLIANCES
Article Abstract:
In spite of its standard aspect, it can be taken for granted that the packaging of small domestic appliances is the result of a precise mix of marketing and of technical constraints. Whilst cardboard is the favourite material for the wedging of the smaller and lighter equipment, the manufacturers have no better solution than PSE for their heavier, bigger products with a higher technological content, in spite of the recycling problems with this material. For the box or case itself, fluting board with a weight of between 120 and 150 g depending on the appliance's weight, is the best solution, as both the small and medium fluting systems have been tested with insufficient results in resistance terms. The decoration is often designed by the manufacturers themselves (Seb, Moulinex, Philips), with colours often neutral to highlight the product itself. Other difficulties for them include the many mentions in different languages and logos to be displayed on the packaging, without speaking of the need to protect the product from theft when the consumer often wants to see the product before purchasing it.

FRANCE: POTENTIAL OF EXPRESSO COFFEE PORTIONS
Article Abstract:
The French consumed 6 kilograms of coffee per household in 1998, representing a market of 1.6mn tonnes, and a turnover of FFr 7.5bn. This is a dynamic market - 95% of the French drink coffee regularly. Malongo, a subsidiary of the Belgian group Rombouts has launched an expresso coffee in individual portions for express coffee machines. Malongo thinks that expresso in individual portions will represent 8% of the coffee market in eight years, on a world market representing FFr 50bn. In 1998 expresso coffee sales in individual portions represented 7,000 tonnes, or 1.2bn individual portions. In France sales of expresso coffee from machines represents 350,000 units per year, compared with the 3mn standard filter coffee machines sold every year.
