A strategy for long-term ocean observations
Article Abstract:
Elements for implementing and sustaining ocean observations in the US are presented. Various operational observing systems for different environments should be installed. The needs of users and design requirements of observing systems should also be determined. An integrated global observing strategy should be put in place for coordinating observing systems. Researchers should be involved in the planning and oversight of observing systems. Relationships should also be established between the ocean and atmospheric research communities. Scientific data should be released to users in a timely manner.

Massive pollution documented over Indian Ocean
Article Abstract:
An international group of scientists involved in the Indian Ocean Experiment (INDOEX) discovered a dense, brown haze of pollution covering about 10 million square kilometers of the Indian Ocean, including the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal. INDOEX scientists found that the documented widespread pollution is caused by high concentrations of tiny pollutant particles called aerosols. They believe that this will dramatically affect climate processes and Indian Ocean's marine life.
