Archean continental assembly in the southeastern Superior Province of Canada

Article Abstract:

Seismic reflections surveys and a seismic refraction survey were acquired between 1988 and 1993 across the eastern part of the Superior Province, with the aim of defining the geometry of crustal structures. It is concluded that the continental crust of the southeastern Superior Province was formed in the late Archean via terrane accretion. The number of volcanics preserved in the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Abitibi belt is due to a deep basin, and seismic data shows evidence of a major postaccretion modification of the lower crust.

A possible southeastern extension of the Midcontinent Rift System located in Ohio

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze a geological structure found in Ohio. The formation was found after a stratigraphic test core drill. Point counter analyses of samples show that a similarity exists between them and middle Protozoic units identified with the Midcontinent Rift System. Similarities in lithology, stratigraphy and structure suggest that the Ohio fromation is an extension of the Midcontinent Rift System.

Patterns of tectonic stress in Sicily from borehole breakout observation and finite element modeling

Article Abstract:

Patterns of in situ tectonic stress was determined from borehole breakout analysis of wells from onshore Sicily. An almost NNW (148 degrees) orientation was detected in the Hyblean Plateau, and the Gela area is characterized by a NNE SHmax direction. The southwestern segment has no preferential SHmax orientation and may be a transition zone with isotropic horizontal stresses.
