Dispersal of the fairy shrimp Branchinecta coloradensis (Anostraca): effects of hydroperiod and salamanders
Article Abstract:
Fairy shrimp Branchinecta may not survive in permanent lakes and ponds because of vertebrate predation. Eggs that go to permanent habitats might never hatch. Live egg-bearing females were transplanted to permanent and temporary ponds in small chambers and left for an entire winter. Results Metamorphic salamanders apparently transport shrimp eggs by eating the shrimp in one pond and defecating in another pond. This appears to be the likeliest means for dispersing thousands of eggs yearly.

Blooms of the picoplanktonic cyanobacterium Synechococcus in Florida Bay, a subtropical inner-shelf lagoon
Article Abstract:
Blooms of the picoplanktonic cyanobacterium Synechococcus in Florida Bay are discussed as an example of biological activity in a subtropical inner-shelf lagoon. Seventeen sites were sampled each month for 51 months to look at termporal and spatial patterns, and the highest intensity and frequency was seen in the north-central part of the bay.
