Cenozoic tectonics of the Cape Roberts Rift Basin and Transantarctic Mountains Front, southwestern Ross Sea, Antarctica

Article Abstract:

Research into Cenozoic tectonics in the southwest sector of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, is presented. It is concluded that the NNW striking fault system enclosing the Cape Roberts Rift Basin on the west, named the McMurdo Sound Fault Zone by the researchers, is a master fault zone for the uplift of the Transantarctic Mountains.

Structural and tectonic evolution of the Ross Sea rift in the Cape Colbeck region, Eastern Ross Sea, Antarctica

Article Abstract:

Research into the structural framework and tectonic evolution of the eastern border of the Ross Sea rift is presented. It is concluded that phoenix plate subduction finished and extension of East Gondwana started at around 105 Ma.

Cenozoic transtension along the Transantarctic Mountains-west Antarctic rift boundary, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica

Article Abstract:

Deformation patterns in the Victoria Land and the Ross Sea are different from the large-magnitude crustal stretching within the West Antarctic rift system during the Cenozoic, and the patterns can be explained by a transtensional model. The crustal thinning probably took place in the Mesozoic during the block motions of major crusts of West Antarctic. The Cenozoic deformation can be explained with plate interaction due to global Eocene plate reorganization before the separation of Antarctica and southern Australia.
