Comment on "Tectonic Evolution of the Troodos Ophiolite within the Tethyan Framework" by Y. Dilek, P. Thy, E.M. Moores, and T.W. Ramsden
Article Abstract:
A critique of Y. Dilek et al's paper entitled 'Tectonic Evolution of the Troodos Ophiolite within the Tethyan Framework' is presented and the different points raised by the article discussed. Detailed analysis of the paper and comparison with previously reported literature indicates that there is no evidence for a subduction zone south of central southern Turkey. Further, geochemical and petrological as well as field data do not support the contention that pillow lavas were generated in different geotectonic environments. Finally, the Mitsero graben is not a remnant of a spreading axis.

Rapid emplacement of the Oman ophiolite: thermal and geochronologic constraints
Article Abstract:
Geochronologic and thermal investigations help to develop a two-stage model for the initial stages of emplacement of the Samail ophiolite, Sultanate of Oman. Intraoceanic thrusting carried the Samail ophiolite over young lithosphere at 150 km/million year (m.y.), parallel to a spreading ridge for 1-2 m.y.. An equally rapid and brief thrusting over cold and old lithosphere followed. The ophiolite was finally emplaced onto the continent by 78 Ma, after a further travel of 400-500 km. The Samail ophiolite was preserved due to its young age and positive buoyancy during ocean closure.
