Crustal thermal regime prior to, during, and after rifting: A geochronolgical and modeling study of the Mesozoic South Alpine rifted margin
Article Abstract:
The Mesozoic thermal evolution of the South Alpine crust before, during and after rifting has been studied using (super40)Ar/(super39)AR spectra and fission track data, together with independently derived kinematic evolution of the crustal sector. Synthetic time versus temperature curves from various points of the South Alpine crust were compared with absolute ages from corresponding samples. It is believed that absolute ages are mainly controlled by downward isotherms and not directly related to deformation. The upper to middle crust was detached from the substratum with the onset of Alpine contraction, and it is demonstrated that no major reactivation occurred in the time span.

Ophiolitic basement to a forearc basin and implications for continental growth: the Coast Range/Great Valley ophiolite, California
Article Abstract:
Seismic reflection, seismic refraction, borehole, gravity and aeromagnetic data derived from the Great Valley forearc basin of California were used to develop 18 geophysical models explaining the Great Valley's origin. These models revealed a huge ophiolite sequence underneath the valley. Ophiolitic breccia overlays ophiolite in the northern part of the valley. However, this phenomenon is absent in the southern region.
