Crystallization processes in an artificial magma: variations in crystal growth, growth rate and composition with melt cooling history
Article Abstract:
Diopsidic to hedenbergitic pyroxene crystals, anorthitic feldspar, potassium feldspar and small amounts of glass are formed by the natural cooling in an artificial mafic melt whose bulk composition is similar to that of a basalt. Rapid convection during melting stops as soon as crystals are formed. The largest number and the biggest crystals are formed in the center of the rock, which cools the slowest. Pyroxene crystals in quickly cooling parts of the melt have a high Al and a low Mg content. The composition and the phase proportions agree with those predicted by the MELTS thermodynamic model.

The petrogenesis of Tertiary cone-sheets in Ardnamurchan, NW Scotland: petrological and geochemical constraints on crustal contamination and partial melting
Article Abstract:
New findings on the mineralogy, whole rock major and trace element compositions and isotope geochemistry of the cone-sheets of Ardnamurchan are presented. The petrogenesis of these magmas with respect to the models of crustal assimilation and lithospheric thinning are examined. Findings indicated that the magmas have a complex contamination history and that they formed by melting at relatively shallow levels in the mantle.
