A comparison of chlorophyll/nutrient dynamics at two survey sites near South Georgia, and the potential role of planktonic nitrogen recycled by land-based predators
Article Abstract:
A comparison of chlorophyll/nutrient dynamics at two survey sites near South Georgia, one of the Falkland Islands, is discussed. The potential role of planktonic nitrogen as recycled by warm-blooded land-based predators has been studied by examination of small-scale distributions of phytoplankton biomass as chlorophyll and nutrients along with physical oceanography in two mesoscale surveys near the island. The island and smaller islands nearby have large populations of macaroni penguins, other breeding birds, and fur seals.

Enhanced chlorophyll at the shelfbreak of the Mid-Atlantic Bight and Georges Bank during the spring transition
Article Abstract:
Chlorophyll is enhanced during the spring transition each year at the shelfbreak of the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) and Georges Bank. The extent of enhancement varies spatially and temporally from year to year. It can cover as much as 1,100 km, including the entire MAB and the southern side of Georges Bank and can last for up to 10 weeks. Pigment concentrations average twice that of adjoining shelf and slope waters. Coastal Zone Color Scanner imagery from 1979 to 1986 has revealed the annual chlorophyll enhancement.
