Educational affairs: are we graduating too many atmospheric scientists?
Article Abstract:
Atmospheric scientists were not faced with employment problems during the 1980s due to several reasons. These include the rapid escalation of hiring at the National Weather Service and the retirement of aging meteorologists. However, employment opportunities declined steadily from 1990 to 1994 as federal funding declined and the number of retirements diminished. This underscores the need for undergraduate and postgraduate employment programs that will provide atmospheric science students with better information and alternative career paths.

1998 warmest year of millenium, climate researchers report
Article Abstract:
Massachusetts University and Arizona University researchers on global warming have published a report that suggests that the 1990s was the warmest decade and 1998 to date was the warmest year of the millenium. Temperatures in the latter half of the 20th century were unprecedented and the warming in the 1900s counters a 1000-year-long cooling trend. The study based its findings on a close scrutiny of natural archives which record climate variations annually, such as tree rings and ice cores.
