Estimates of the nonconsumptive mortality of mesozooplankton by measurement of sedimentation losses
Article Abstract:
Little is known about the rate of mortality of zooplankton that is not related to predators, and its impact on zooplankton population dynamics. Reasons for nonconsumptive zooplankton mortality include senescence, starvation, unsuccessful predator attack and illness. Studies show nonconsumptive mortality has different impacts on different species of zooplankton, from less than 0.5% to 38% of total population decline.

Ancient blue-green blooms
Article Abstract:
The 1980s and 1990s have witnessed a large increase in surface scums of cyanophytes, blue-green algae and bacteria, in lowland lakes in Europe. This has caused public concern, since they can be toxic to mammals, and costly in water treatment. Paleolimnology has revealed anthropogenic bloom incidence before the modern period and before human settlement.
