Evaluation of the Pattison and Newton (1989) experiments

Article Abstract:

A study of the temperature-sensitive Fe-Mg exchange equilibrium reveals that the equilibrium constitutes a multicomponent solution-precipitation process involving dissolution of metastable garnet (Grt) and clinopyroxene (Cpx) starting components and precipitation of the newly produced Grt and Cpx. The equilibrium reflects certain uncommon solution properties of Grt and Cpx, and a geothermometer expression that primarily returns low temperatures for granulites. This Fe-Mg exchange equilibrium is applied in geothermometry of amphibolites, granulites and eclogites.

H2O activity in concentrated KCl and KCl-NaCl solutions at high temperatures and pressures measured by the brucite-periclase equilibrium

Article Abstract:

Solute and H2O activities in the KCl-H2O system at deep crust and upper mantle pressure conditions were measured to characterize the thermodynamic behavior of supercritical alkali chloride brines. Measurement of H2O activity in KCl-H2O-(MgO) indicated the presence of low solute activity and high alkali ability in supercritical fluids. Supercritical fluids in the KCl-NaCl solutions also exhibited mechanical properties that were suitable for silicate grain boundaries.

Thermodynamic analysis

Article Abstract:

The temperature evaluations dependent on the derived garnet-clinopyroxene (Grt-Cpx) thermodynamic properties are commonly 70 to 200 degree centigrade higher than that received by D.R.M. Pattison and R.C. Newton. These evaluations are consistent with temperature estimates based on other Fe-Mg exchange equilibria and other phase equilibria data incorporating Grt, Cpx and olivine.
