Extensional collapse of the northern Taiwan mountain belt: comment and reply

Article Abstract:

The theory that the northern Taiwan volcanic zone is an extension of the Ryukyu volcanic front may not be feasible stemming from geochemical data which reveal wide differences in Nb/Zr and Ba/Zr basaltic rock ratios. Moreover, the termination of magmatism of the northern Taiwan volcanic zone was simply coincidental to the opening of the Okinawa Trough. Data suggest that volcanic rocks older than 2 Ma can be found in both eastern and western sides of the zone. Hence, magmatic activity did not cease due to opening of the Trough.

Opening of the central Atlantic and asymmetric mantle upwelling phenomena: implications for long-lived magmatism in western North Africa and Europe: comment and reply

Article Abstract:

Oyarzun et al.'s model of the formation of the central North Atlantic Ocean through the rifting of the Pangia is highly stylized that a great deal of realism is lost. Their model indicates the close relationship between tectonic and magmatic activity but fails to show the correct geographical patterns involved. Furthermore, the model's depiction of convergence on plume sites does not apply to many cases such as maps of dikes in Asia and South America.

Fracture-controlled magma conduits in an obliquely convergent continental magmatic arc: comment and reply

Article Abstract:

Tobisch and Cruden (1995) developed a model for the ascent/emplacement of two nested pluttons within the central Sierra Nevada batholith, California. They used the orientation of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility ellipsoids for the model. Unfortunately, their model provides limited information on magma flow paths and fabric geometry, relative timing of fabric formation and cause of magmatic fabrics.
