Floyd A. Huff: 1913-1998

Article Abstract:

Renowned meteorologist Floyd A Huff died on Feb 23, 1998 after spending his whole life on the study of weather and climate. He graduated from the Weather Officers School in Sep 1943 and was hired by the Illinois State Water Survey in Mar 1948. Huff, who was the first atmospheric scientist to join the Survey's meteorological program, focused on hydrometeorology due to his engineering background. After his retirement in 1979, he was asked to work part-time for the American Meteorological Society until 1997 when he had to stop working to take care of his ailing wife.

David M. Hershfield (1919-1993)

Article Abstract:

Meteorologist David M. Hershfield died on Apr 15, 1993. He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles with a BS in Meteorology. He acquired his doctorate from the University of Maryland. He started his career in meteorology as an observer for the US Weather Bureau and became senior meteorologist at the Hydrographic Laboratory of the US Dep of Agriculture in Beltsville, MD. His best known for 'Rainfall Frequency Atlas of the United States,' which is the primary reference for hydrologists used to this date.

Lewis David Kaplan: 1917-1999

Article Abstract:

The contributions of meteorologist Lewis David Kaplan are presented. These included pioneering the use of emission spectroscopy for atmospheric remote sensing and an analytical scheme to obtain spectral channel temperature profiles which took into account surface emissivity and the effects of clouds.
