Foreland normal fault control on northwest Himalayan thrust front development

Article Abstract:

There is sedimentological and structural evidence for an early phase of deformation at a number of locations in the Trans-Indus Ranges along the western part of the northwest Himalayan thrust front. This evidence shows that two significant phases of deformation regionally characterize the tectonic history in the region of the current thrust front. The onset of deformation in the Trans-Indus is only limited by a minimum age, but it seems possible that the early deformation is characterized by a westward younging, similar to that seen for the younger thrusting.

Simultaneous development of noncylindrical folds, frontal ramps, and transfer faults in a compressional regime: experimental investigations of Himalayan examples

Article Abstract:

Clay models were utilized to simulate the noncylindrical folds, frontal ramps and transfer faults that led to the development of the Lesser Himalayas in India. Analysis of the simultaneous development of geologic conditions that formed the Lesser Himalayas via clay modelling indicated the role of fault displacement and strike-slip displacement in controlling the geometry of the transfer fault. Furthermore, the noncylindrical folds in the vicinity of the transfer fault exhibited systematic curvature fold hinge lines opposite the tectonic transport direction.
