Mordechai Heinz Gilead: 1906-1995

Article Abstract:

Meteorologist Mordechai Heinz Gilead, Director of the Israel Meteorological Service from 1948-1971 and an emeritus member of the American Meteorological Society, died on June 14, 1995 at age 89. He was born in Luckenwalde, Germany, in 1906 and emigrated as a refugee to Italy where he finished his studies. He emigrated to Palestine in 1935 and worked as a servant in the Dept. of Survey. In 1936/1937, he founded the Palestine Meteorological Service with two other meteorologists and served as its deputy government meteorologist from 1937 to 1948.

Frank Lionel Martin: 1915-1998

Article Abstract:

Meteorologist Frank Lionel Martin died on Apr 2, 1998 at the age of 82. Martin began his career in meteorology in a practical field experience position in Northwest Orient Airlines during the 1940s. He then devoted 31 years of his life doing research and teaching at the Naval Postgraduate School. Among Martin's greatest accomplishments is his writing of the internationally-reknowned textbook 'Dynamical and Physical Meteorology.'
