Ice break-up on southern Lake Baikal and its relationship to local and regional air temperatures in Siberia and to the North Atlantic Oscillation
Article Abstract:
Ice break-up on southern Lake Baikal, the deepest freshwater lake on earth and the largest in volume, 456 m above sea level in eastern Siberia, is discussed relative to local and regional air temperatures and to the North Atlantic Oscillation. Results of a study of an uninterrupted 128-year record are presented. The break-up date in the second part of the time-series seems to relate to the mean air temperature in the thawing phase and also to that of the coldest part of the year.

Environmental change controls of lacustrine carbonate, Cayuga Lake, New York: comment and reply
Article Abstract:
The global change involves the relationship in the rise of calcite content in sediments from hard water lakes formed during the past 200 yrs, and the recent rise of global atmospheric carbon dioxide. It is unconvincing since the data, gathered from Cayuga Lake, NY is not adequate. There may be other factors that have contributed to the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide such as phosphate concentrations and lake water temperature.
