Jurassic formation and Eocene subduction of the Zermatt-Saas-Fee ophiolites: implications for the geodynamics evolution of the Central and Western Alps
Article Abstract:
The collision between the Adriatic and European continental plates during the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods caused the formation of the Alpine chain and subduction of continental and oceanic crust under the Adriatic margin. A new study uses a cathodoluminescence-based ion microprobe to determine the dating of formation and subduction of the Zermatt-Saas-Fee ophiolites (ZSFO) found in the Alpine chain. It is suggested that ZSFO formation is inhibited by the intrusion ages of the ophiolitic metagabbros.

Mineral chemistry of submarine lavas from Hilo Ridge, Hawaii: implications for magmatic processes within Hawaiian rift zones
Article Abstract:
The submarine-erupted lavas recovered from the Hilo Ridge, a rift zone near Mauna Kea volcano, were found to have olivine, plagioclase, augite ...orthopyroxene phenocrysts which provide constraints on the magmatic processes beneath Hawaiian rift zones. These phenocrysts vary in composition that could be understood after mixing a multiphase saturated, evolved magma with other mafic magma which contain only an olivine.
