Scattering and attenuation properties of Emiliania huxleyi cells and their detached coccoliths
Article Abstract:
The ratio of coccoliths to cells in a coccolithophore bloom affects optical properties, which vary within and between blooms. Spectral backscattering and spectral beam attenuation were measured for coccoliths, plated cells and naked cells of Emiliania huxleyi. The plated cells can make a greater contribution to the optical properties than the sum of their coating coccoliths. A high ratio of free liths is thus associated with stronger spectral variation.

Theoretical and experimental approaches to improve the accuracy of particulate absorption coefficients derived from the quantitative filter technique
Article Abstract:
A modified quantitative filter technique has been developed using a correction factor based on a new model for path-length amplification. Topics discussed include the topical properties of blank filter pads and a test of the model with independent data.
