Jose J. Fernandez-Partagas: 1935-1997
Article Abstract:
Jose J. Fernandez-Partagas started his career in meteorology with a stint at the Cuban National Weather Service at the National Observatory in Havana. Once an active member of the Meteorological Society in Havana, the Cuban native left for the US in 1961 to escape from the political instability in Cuba. In the US, he joined the Civil Aviation Division of the Bahamian Weather Service after graduating from the Florida State University with a masteral degree in meteorology. Fernandez-Partagas died at the University of Miami Library on Aug 25, 1997, without a family and almost penniless.

Patrick D. McTaggart-Cowan: 1912-1997
Article Abstract:
A former head of the Canadian Meterological Service Patrick D. McTaggart-Cowan died on Oct 11, 1997 leaving behind his wife Margaret, a daughter, Gillian, an oceanographer and a son, James, a meteorologist. A native of Scotland, he migrated with his parents to Vancouver, Canada after graduating with honors at the University of British Columbia in 1933. His first job as a meteorologist was with the Canadian Meteorological Service. A well-decorated man, UK made him a Member of the Order of the British Empire while in the US, he was granted the Robert M. Losey Award.
