Modeling the relative contributions of autotrophs and heterotrophs to carbon flow at a Lagrangian JGOFS station in the Northeast Atlantic: the importance of DOC
Article Abstract:
Lack of data on dissolved organic carbon made it difficult to model ecosystem carbon flows in the Northeast Atlantic. Results suggest that organisms less than 5 micrometers in size, including small phytoplankton, bacteria and microzooplankton, contribute most to community respiration. Downward flux of particulate organic carbon appears to be produced by large phytoplankton and mesozooplankton. Gross primary production in the model was more than twice that predicted by C14 measurements. Dissolved organic carbon was produced primarily by phytoplankton exudation.

Glycine betaine uptake, retention, and degradation by microorganisms in seawater
Article Abstract:
Uptake, retention and degradation of glycine betaine (GBT), which may act as an osmolyte, in marine microorganisms is discussed. Topics include sample collection and processing, effects of salinity, kinetic determinations, size fractionation, and temperature effects.

The role of surface-active carbohydrates in the formation of transparent exopolymer particles by bubble adsorption of seawater
Article Abstract:
The article focuses on the study of the seawater surface-active carbohydrates extracted by bubble adsorption. Experiments with high algal activity waters are discussed.
