Multispectral and hyperspectral remote sensing of alpine snow properties
Article Abstract:
Models of processes in the alpine snow cover fundamentally depend on the spatial distribution of the surface energy balance over areas where topographic variability causes huge differences in the incoming solar radiation and in snow depth due to redistribution by wind. The research challenges include the remote sensing of absorbing impurities, accounting for variability with depth, retrieving snow cover in forested regions, reconciling field measurements of emissive with snow properties and adapting the algorithms to frequent, large scale processing.

Modern analogs in Quaternary paleoecology: Here today, gone yesterday, gone tomorrow?
Article Abstract:
The logic, development, methodology, and applications of the analog approach in Quaternary paleoecology, emphasizing its success and breakthroughs as well as its pitfalls and shortcomings are reviewed. Better understanding of the nature of past no-analog vegetation, and the underlying causes, would address important issues in ecology and evolutionary biology and help anticipate biotic responses to the no-analog greenhouse world of the near future.

River avulsions and their deposits
Article Abstract:
Avulsion is the natural process by which flow diverts out of an established river channel into a new permanent course on the adjacent floodplain. The analyses of bifurcating channels suggest that thresholds in the relative energy slope and Shields parameter of the bifurcating channel system are key factors.
