New observations on a Pridoli plant assemblage from north Xinjiang, northwest China, with comments on its evolutionary and paleogeographical significance
Article Abstract:
A small assemblage of fossilized land plants from several late Silurian (Pridoli) outcrops in Xinjiang, North China was compared with coeval assemblages from Europe, North America, North Africa and Kazakhstan. Findings have shown a closer affinity of the Pridoli plant remains to the Kazakhstan fossil assemblage and this lead scientists to postulate a paleogeographic proximity of China to Kazakhstan during the late Silurian. The Pridoli plants were closely interbedded with graptolites, justifying a Silurian rather than a Devonian age for the assemblage.

Do seismic reflections necessarily have chronostratigraphic significance?
Article Abstract:
An assumption fundamental to an important technique of contemporary geology may be unjustified. Reflections of seismic waves from within sedimentary successions are assumed to have chronostratigraphic meaning in the interpretation of seismic reflection data. The reason for this is that it was believed that seismic reflections would only be generated along stratal surfaces and not along boundaries of lithostratigraphic units which are discontinuous and gradational. Experiments have shown that under certain circumstances this belief may be false.

A reinterpretation of scottish 'hummocky moraine' and its significance for the deglaciation of the scottish highlands during the younger dryas or loch lomond stadial
Article Abstract:
A large fraction of the 'hummocky moraine' in the Loch Lomond Readvance ice-cap in Scotland can be construed as an accumulation of ice-front moraines during Loch Lomond Stadial or the Younger Dryas when glaciers and ice-caps decayed actively. Aerial photographs of the hummocky moraine reveal radial down-valley ridges and concentric cross-valley ridges. The modern glaciers and the hummocky moraine show similarities in the spatial arrangement of the ridges. The deglaciation patterns can be studied with the help of the 'hummocky moraine.'
