Oxidation of ammonia and methane in an alkaline, saline lake
Article Abstract:
Oxidation of ammonia (NH3) appears to play an important role in the biogeochemical processes of Mono Lake, California, an alkaline saline lake. Less nitrogen may be lost from NH3 volatilization as a result. A dynamic interaction among primary producers, zooplankton grazers, bacterial NH3 remineralizers and NH3 oxidizers is suggested. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (CH3) also occurs and reduces potential surface flux, but this process is less significant for plankton dynamics.

Boundary mixing and nutrient fluxes in Mono Lake, California
Article Abstract:
In Mono Lake in California, temperature-gradient microstructure and nutrient profiling have been carried out offshore and inshore to see whether boundary mixing takes place and to look at effects on nutrient flux. Turbulence was two to three orders of magnitude higher at the inshore location than at the same depths offshore. Results showed vertical flux of nutrients occurs over a limited area across the nutricline during intense mixing initiated by high winds.

The onset of meromixis during restoration of Mono Lake, California: unintended consequences of reducing water diversions
Article Abstract:
Persistent chemical stratification, or meromixis, has occurred in Mono Lake, caused by a sudden 1-m rise in surface elevation. Meromixis is expected to remain for several decades, according to long-term simulations. Diversions of freshwater streams have been restricted in an effort to restore the lake, and there was also above average snowmelt runoff in 1995, accounting for the rise in surface elevation.
