Reply to Charlesworth
Article Abstract:
Charlesworth (1997) has found three weaknesses in Slatkin's (1996) argument that there is greater opportunity to respond to selection in a new and rapidly growing population. He has noted that Slatkin ignored the occurrence of sampling during population bottlenecks, failed to describe the link between peak shifts and reproductive isolation, and failed to support his assumption that peak shifts will occur with high frequency. While Slatkin concedes that Charlesworth has made valid criticisms, he argues that the latter's model is not the only one consistent with the founder-flush process and that this process should not be dismissed as improbable.

Metapopulation genetics and the evolution of dispersal
Article Abstract:
A Markovian migrant-pool island model that incorporates the age structure of local population enables consideration of the effects of successional dynamics and demography on the evolution of migration. Within-deme selection favors low dispersers while between-deme selection supports migrants thus enabling the coexistence of types with various dispersal rates.
