Rules for allocation in a temperate forest ant: demography, natural selection, and queen-worker conflict
Article Abstract:
A study of two populations of the forest ant shows a remarkable annual and population variation in the amount of growth and reproduction made by nests with the allocation pattern being unaffected by site or food treatment. Nest demography is an important factor in controlling allocation patterns in the specie as revealed by path analysis. In Vermont, nest growth is consistently more important to total output than reproduction but it is more flexible in New York. The allocation pattern in Vermont follows the natural selection at proximal level while in New York it shows an ultimate-level process.

Seed size and phylogeny in six temperate floras: constraints, niche conservatism, and adaptation
Article Abstract:
Phylogenetic niche conservatism (PNC) models of trait evolution provide more successful explanations of seed size variation than do models based solely on phylogenetic constraints. Taxonomic membership accounts for a large percentage of seed size variation in certain niches. Considering that plants of the same lineage often are not consistent across data sets, but rather appear to be consistent with different niches, further suggests an important role for PNC.
