Serving science and society: lessons from large-scale atmospheric science programs
Article Abstract:
The failure of the scientific community to meet expectations has diminished the public's faith in the scientific enterprise, resulting to decreasing budgets for science research. Scientists can restore this faith by demonstrating the societal benefits and usability of research through effective scientific programs. A critical aspect of this endeavor is the marketing of science programs within the scientific community and the federal government. The factors influencing the marketing success of large-scale atmospheric science programs are discussed.

Report discusses use of units in atmospheric chemistry
Article Abstract:
The Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is proposing the use of units in atmospheric chemistry. In its report, the commission explored the use of units to express the amounts of substances, reaction rates and exchange rates. It is evaluating the International System of Units to be used as a framework for units in atmospheric chemistry. The document containing the results of the commission's study was published in volume 67 of 'Pure Applied Chemistry.'

Earth Interactions: an electronic journal serving the earth system science and community
Article Abstract:
The American Meteorological Society, together with the American Geophysical Union and the Association of American Geographers, has launched an electronic journal called 'Earth Interactions.' The journal does not merely seek to complement existing print journals by publishing original research on earth system sciences. Instead, its aim is to take full advantage of the electronic medium and go beyond the limitations of the print medium.
