Sherman Wilcox Betts 1909-1998
Article Abstract:
US Navy Capt Sherman Betts died on Feb 28, 1998 at the age of 88. In 1931, he graduated from the Naval Academy with a commission in the US Navy. In 1941, he earned his master's degree in meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Betts served as a weatherman under Gen McArthur's command in the Philippines, New Guinea and Australia during World War II. He also served as a weatherman under Fleet Air Wing 18 in Jul 1945. After retiring from the US Navy with the rank of captain in 1965, he continued working with the National Science Foundation until 1972.

Symposium commemorates 100th anniversary of Rossby's birth
Article Abstract:
The 100th birth anniversary of Carl-Gustaf Rossby was commemorated through an international symposium entitled 'Rossby-100' which was held in Stockholm, Sweden, from Jun 8 to Jun 12, 1998. Rossby's greatest contributions to meteorology and oceanographic science were the establishment of the International Meteorological Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1955 and the Swedish military weather service's use of numerical weather predictions in an operational mode.
