Short-range ensemble forecasting: report from a workshop, 25-27 July 1994
Article Abstract:
Participants to the workshop jointly sponsored by the National Meteorological Center and the National Severe Storms Laboratory from July 25-27, 1994 in Camp Springs, MD, proposed to conduct a one-year pilot study to test short-range ensemble forecasting (SREF) as an operation concept in weather forecasting. Speakers at the workshop suggested using analysis error as basis for initializing the model that will represent the SREF concept. The proceedings of the workshop and suggestions proposed by the speakers are presented.

The first El Nino observed and forecasted from start to finish
Article Abstract:
The El Nino climate phenomenon in 1997-98 was the first of its kind that scientists were able to predict and observe completely from start to finish. This was made possible by the deployment of surface observing systems in the Pacific Ocean following the strong El Nino in 1982-83. Advanced oceans and atmospheric remote sensing satellites were also used to gather data on the Pacific. Scientists say that they were able to predict El Nino six months in advance which allowed preparations for its impact.

Water vapor data added to UPS deliveries
Article Abstract:
United Parcel Service (UPS) will be involved in bringing weather data to the Commerce Dept's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The water vapor data gathered by Water Vapor Sensing System probes attached to the left side of the UPS B-757 aircraft will be used to develop aviation forecasting methods and weather and climate modelling. The technique enables frequent collection of water vapor data in many areas of the country.
