Structure of the Altyn Tagh Fault and Daxue Shan from magnetotelluric surveys: Implications for faulting associated with the rise of the Tibetan Plateau

Article Abstract:

Faulting linked to the rise of the Tibetan Plateau is considered in surveys of the structure of the Altyn Tagh Fault and Daxue Shan.

A possible middle Paleozoic suture in the Altyn Tagh, NW China

Article Abstract:

Much attention has been paid to the Cenozoic tectonics of the Altyn Tagh (AT) range, although the older history is not well understood. Data suggests than an ocean basin closed after the Early Silurian and before the Middle Devonian, forming the Lapeiquan suture. Subduction may have been south dipping. Lateral continuations should be identifiable if the AT contains a middle Paleozoic suture. Lithology and radiometric data was compared, and indications are that the AT originated as part of the same middle Paleozoic orogenic belt.

Quaternary transfer faulting and belt front deformation at Kakuashan

Article Abstract:

The Pakuashan-Tatushan fold-thrust system area is distinguished by a curvature of the deformation front. The various structures and tectonic features linked to the outermost frontal units of the area are discussed in an attempt to explain the regional curvature. A model for the origin of a quaternary transfer fault is proposed, that accommodates the motion of thrust sheets. The structural complexity of the Pakuashan transverse fold is largely due to structural inhomogeneities in the predeformed foreland, which provide new insights into transfer faulting.
