The Pamir-Hindu Kush seismic zone as a strain marker for flow in the upper mantle

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to develop a new hypothesis to explain the distinct pattern of intermediate-depth earthquakes in the Pamir-Hindu Kush region of central Asia, one of the most active regions of intermediate-depth seismicity in the world. The new model is an application of the familiar snow plough model of collisional tectonics. It proposes that the intermediate-depth seismicity beneath the Pamir-Hindu Kush region is defining the edge condition of the impact of the bulldozer in the upper mantle. The current seismicity indicates the location of a portion of oceanic lithosphere that is functioning as a strain marker for flow in the asthenosphere in this part of the mantle.

Upper plate contraction north of the migrating Mendocino triple junction, northern California: implications for partitioning of strain

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the movement of the active faults in the southern Cascadia subduction zone in California. The use of geodetic models to predict the seismic hazards associated with the faults is discussed.

Mediterranean extension and the Africa-Eurasia collision

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the tectonic events occurring during the Africa-Eurasia collision 30- to 25-million-years ago. The effect of the collision on geological events in the Mediterranean area are discussed.
