The dimensions and topographic setting of Antarctic subglacial lakes and implications for large-scale water storage beneath continental ice sheets

Article Abstract:

A study on the subglacial lakes in Antartica was conducted to determine its dimensions and topography. Majority of about 70 subglacial lakes identified were situated in the ice-sheet interior with around 75% of them registering radio-echo lengths of less than 10 km. Data collected through airborne radio-echo sounding also suggests that the Vostok Lake is the largest subglacial lake in the region. The amount of water stored in large subglacial lakes is not the only source for major glacial meltwater floods.

Lakes beneath the ice sheet: The occurrence, analysis, and future exploration of Lake Vostok and other Antarctic subglacial lakes

Article Abstract:

Subglacial lakes occur since the ice base is kept warm by geothermal heating and generated meltwater collects in topographic hollows. The exploration of subglacial lakes has two goals that include finding and understanding the life that inhabit the unique environments and measuring the climate records that occur in sediments on lake floors.

Subglacial processes

Article Abstract:

The processes operating beneath glaciers are likely to have a greater influence on flow dynamics than those operating within them. The warm-soft case supports the greatest variety of processes and is the most important for fast-flow dynamics and for the mobilization of subglacial sediment.
