The participation of women in meteorology and hydrology in the United States: the U.S. response to a World Meteorological Organization questionnaire
Article Abstract:
The World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Nov 1996 questionnaire on the participation of American men and women in WMO activities and in meteorology and hydrology sought to assess women's status in these and other related geophysical science fields. The findings indicate more men participating in WMO activities than women and the same goes for enrollment in meteorology and hydrology training. Also, women were found to be in the minority in terms of employment in these fields. Such findings are significant in that they can be used to identify key areas where women participation is needed.

Mobile homes and severe windstorms
Article Abstract:
Mobile home owners should be prepared for severe weather conditions, since thousands of mobile homes are damaged yearly by windstorms. Complicating matters is the fact the flying debris from such homes inflict damage to surrounding property. The threat of death, injury and property damage can be reduced by encouraging residents to acquire proper tie-down information, ensure that their homes are properly anchored, familiarize themselves with emergency procedures, prepare to evacuate to a safer location and bat for the construction of adequate shelters at all mobile home parks.

Meteorological drought
Article Abstract:
Governments should formulate policies that promote the development and implementation of drought mitigation measures appropriate for regional conditions. Such policies can help prevent or minimize the economic, social and environmental effects of droughts. Drought plans should include the development of an integrated climate monitoring and delivery system for conveying information to decision makers in a timely manner and the development of a drought monitoring system which includes improved methodologies for early assessment of drought impacts.
