The role of colloids in tracemetal transport and adsorption behavior in New Jersey Pinelands streams
Article Abstract:
The role of colloids in tracemetal adsorption and transport behavior in New Jersey Pinelands streams is discussed. By using cross-flow filtration (CFF) to determine colloidal fractions of streamwater Al, Fe, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn, and Cd in the Mullica River and three tributaries, researchers have sought to understand colloidal metal dynamics in aquatic systems. Better constraints on CFF performance for waters high in dissolved organic carbon and low in ionic strength would be needed to do that so that complementary data sets could be rigorously compared to test generalizable hypotheses.

Acetate retention and metabolism in the hyporheic zone of a mountain stream
Article Abstract:
Metabolism and acetate retention in the hyporheic zone of a mountain stream in New Mexico are discussed. In a study an in situ acetate injection was put to use to determine the influence of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) availability on microbial respiration. Bromide was added as a conservative tracer. The hypothesis that microbial respiration in the zone is limited by the availability of labile DOC is supported and a suite of metabolic processes have been shown to cooccur. Anaerobic processes dominate heterotrophic metabolism in this stream.
