Why is it downhill from Tonopah to Las Vegas?: a case for mantle plume support of the high northern basin and range
Article Abstract:
A mantle plume may be responsibile for the 800 m topographic step between Tonopah and Las Vegas. Various measuures point to a combination of crustal and deep buoyancy sources related to the heat and melt input of an anomalously hot asthenospheric source. The isostatic balance for the difference in elevation between the high northern and the low southern Basin and Range is not found within the crust. The mantle plume explanation is also consistent with isotopic, gravity, seismic, and heat flow observations.

Mechanical role of backstops in the growth of forearcs
Article Abstract:
The effects of the mechanical properties and geometry of a backstop on forearc structures are analyzed. Results show that a wide range of structural features in modern forearcs is due to the existence of a transition within the forearc from weak to a backstop of a stronger rock. Backstops are not characterized by any lithology or age, because they are the result of a lateralincrease in strength compared to the rock farther trenchward.

Synkinematic(?) intrusion of the "anorogenic" 1425 Ma Beer Bottle Pass pluton, southern Nevada
Article Abstract:
Field and microstructural data reveal the synkinematic nature of the Beer Bottle Pass pluton, southern NV, by attributing responses to regional tectonic strains as the major factor in the formation of mylonitic shear zones associated with the 1425 Ma Beer bottle Pass pluton. The shear zones, which possess a major dextral shear component, display a steady west-side-up contractile deformation.
