A vector-autoregression analysis of state-government expenditure

Article Abstract:

The interaction of state-government spending categories is examined by estimating a vector autoregression. Variations from trend have important effects on future own-category spending. In most cases, however, the rise in spending above trend on a category has no statistical significance on the detrended future spending of other categories. This means that a rise in spending above the state trend on a category is not paid by lowering other spending categories below their trends but by increased tax revenues.

Understanding the costs of sovereign default: American state debts in the 1840s

Article Abstract:

US states repaid their debts owed to foreign creditors in the 1840s in order to enjoy credit benefits in the international market. This disproves arguments that debtor states can be forced to repay debts only by imposing sanctions against them. No foreign country, however, could dare impose sanctions against US states because of the strength of their federal government. Creditor states cannot also sever trade relations because of their dependence on US exports.

State taxes and interstate hazardous waste shipments

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the extent to which state taxes on disposal of hazardous waste have affected interstate shipments of hazardous waste. A panel of hazardous waste disposal tax data for the 48 continental states were used. Results showed a decrease in shipments of waste to states with high taxes. Moreover, states with large capacity or import large volumes of waste were found to have the largest disposal taxes.
