Australia, ASEAN and the East Asian hemisphere
Article Abstract:
The Australian foreign minister, Garth Evans, feels that Australia and East Asian nations are increasingly coming closer in terms of economic and security relations, people to people contact and new institutional linkage. Australian trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) shows phenomenal growth during the 1990s, and the Australian defense cooperation with the ASEAN nations is more than the cooperation within ASEAN. The numbers of Southeast Asian students in Australia are increasing rapidly, and tourism from ASEAN nations to Australia is growing annually by 40%.

ASEAN: forum, caucus, and community
Article Abstract:
The political and economic implications of cooperation between members of the Assn of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) are analyzed. It is argued that ASEAN's role in maintaining a harmonious international order has translated into economic benefits for its members. Thus, the question of whether the ASEAN should function as a caucus or community becomes irrelevant since the organization is moving towards the direction that benefits members. The impact of ASEAN expansion are discussed.
