Cheap talk
Article Abstract:
Most private information sharing in competitive markets is effected through cheap talk which consists of nonbinding messages that influence the listeners' minds. Cheap talk in mixed motive economic interactions, such as bargaining, can lead to meaningful communication of private information in equilibrium. However, game-theorists argue that cheap talk may not always be meaningful and enhance efficiency. Such informal talk offers efficient coordination in pure coordination situations where the message is both self-signaling and self-committing.
