Comment on L. Hjalmarsson and A. Veiderpass, "Productivity in Swedish Electricity Retail Distribution." (response to article by Lennart Hjalmarsson and Ann Veiderpass in this issue, p.S193)
Article Abstract:
An analysis of research describing productivity in Swedish electric power distribution is presented. Earlier conclusions suggesting that ownership does not generate differences in productivity fail to consider the privatization the sector has been going through. The validity of the data envelopment method applied to earlier research lacked evidence for complete input information and behavioral content. Finally, the question of new technology's impact on productivity returns has not been resolved by earlier findings.

Comment on E. Mellander, "An Indirect Approach to Measuring Productivity in Private Services." (response to article by Erik Mellander in this issue, p. S229)
Article Abstract:
An analysis of earlier research describing productivity measurements under specific conditions is presented. Earlier research assumes incomplete output information, homothetic production technology and imperfectly competitive output markets. Analysis shows that the concerned research presents a useful method of measuring total factor productivity growth given only output values. This usefulness assumes that markup remains constant across time.
