Company ownership vs franchising: issues and evidence

Article Abstract:

An empirical study is made on company ownership and franchising choice. Using data obtained from 'Franchising in the Economy, 1986-1988' of the Department of Commerce, the research relates the proportion of company-owned outlets among franchising companies to control costs and monitoring sources. The study reveals strong relations between company ownership and higher population densities and urbanization. In addition, the research supports the perception that densely populated areas have lower monitoring costs.

Evidence of forward discount determinants and volatility behavior

Article Abstract:

The components of the forward discount dynamics in Germany from 1972 to 1996 are analyzed using two different frequencies. Findings show that an ARCH structure is appropriate for the monthly data, while an EGARCH structure affords a better description of daily forward discount volatility. They also indicate that foreign central bank reserves and portfolio investment are important in determining the trend of forward discount during the whole period, although the causality varies over time.
