Competition for jobs in a growing economy and the emergence of dualism

Article Abstract:

The increasing share of temporary work in total employment in Europe is explained using a matching model. A slowdown in the increase of labor productivity is demonstrated to result in the emergence of short-term employment and boosts its share of total employment. It is also established that higher population growth increases the share of temporary employment. Moreover, the increase in the share of short-term employment weakens the bargaining position of workers during periods of low growth.

Residential mobility, housing equity and the labour market

Article Abstract:

A linear relationship exists between housing equity and residential mobility. An analysis of the United Kingdom (UK) household longitudinal data during the early part of 1990s showed that the occurrence of negative equity during covered periods had created a significant negative effect on residential mobility and housing market transactions. On the other hand, no relationship was established between residential mobility and labor market conditions.
